Anyone else's copy have the reverse of sleeve upside down to the front as the one posted here shows the back the right way round in images whereas the one I acquired on the day has it upside down - unique? This set features the original album recut from the original master tapes at Bernie Grundman Mastering, plus an additional LP of rare studio outtakes, alternate versions, and previously unreleased instrumental rough mixes from the Clear Spot sessions. As if it wasn’t difficult enough keeping up with the break-ups, make-ups and ever-changing members of Fleetwood Mac, the legendary band are now releasing alternate versions of some of their best-loved albums to add a further layer of confusion. It all makes more sense as a project when the songs are stripped back to show their inner workings, as on The Chain, and it’s in the vastly different demos, acoustic takes and early versions that these discs come into their own.

And even in the numerous instances where the well-known versions seem superior, the alternates often prove illuminating. I don’t really care to hear a 6 second conversation saying I can’t hear you can we redo this…or some other thing that doesn’t add to the album. There’s a reason why Rumours, in particular, is one of the most commercially successful albums of all time (it was the UK’s biggest-selling vinyl album in 2020, 43 years after its release), and it’s that it is a nigh-on perfect pop-rock record.

Disc Two’s BBC In Concert from June 1971 heralds, as MC John Peel drily observes, the arrival of a new ensemble, fronted by Ronson – soon be renamed The Spiders from Mars for the following year’s Ziggy Stardust album, which, incredibly, was being written concurrently – along with a circus of bohemian hangers-on, one of whom, Dana Gillespie, sings the newly minted Andy Warhol.
