About this deal

Follow the Thames Path, enjoying open views of the Thames and passing by Hampton Court Park and Golf Course. I hope you enjoy these self-guided London walking tours as much as I have, and that you get a chance to explore all the city’s secret spaces. Happy walking! Eltham Palace was bought in 1931 by the wealthy Stephen Courtauld who started a period of transformation and extension that led to some of the best-preserved Art Deco interiors you can find today. Next on my list of London walking books is The Capital Ring. As the name implies, this book covers the famous 78-mile (125-kilometer) circular route around inner London.

That means you can go and enjoy the delicious street food and *cough cough* boozy drinks in the golden main hall in a relatively crowd-free setting – or at least without the hoards that you’d expect elsewhere.

10. Regent’s Canal, from Paddington to Limehouse

The walk covers everything from green spaces to abandoned railway lines, towpaths, and nature reserves as it takes you around the UK capital.

So when the lights go down and the chanting starts, don’t be surprised if you get just the tiniest shiver down your spine. It is weiiiiiiiiiird but in a good way. From charming squares to narrow passageways, side streets to hidden courtyards, these secret London walking tours will take you to some of my favorite hidden places around the UK capital. This walk – though it takes several necessary detours off the towpath – is known as one of the most beautiful stretches of waterway in England. This is not one of the most hidden walks in London; in fact, it’s wildly popular. Best to go early in the morning or later at night to avoid tourists.

Find London walks from the list below which features the best walking routes in the area. Most are circular walks and are listed from the shortest and easiest to the longest more challenging routes. Map - London The self-guided London walks in this book will take you around to see monuments dedicated to monarchs, military greats, politicians, local heroes, artists, writers, and other notable people. It’s a great one if you like history and art. Still, while some places like the Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town and Nightjar have made their way onto most people’s radars, others like Oriole have stayed relatively low-key. As the name would suggest, this seven-mile walk was created to commemorate Diana Princess of Wales. We were passing an old history book around the office (because we really know how to have a good time in our downtime) and saw mention of it.Shaughan has made two Podcasts based on this walk. Listening to either or both of them will give you an exceptionally good idea of what’s on the menu – what you get on the walk – and how it’s served up, the guiding. Here’s the Hidden London –Podcast 1. And here’s Hidden London – Podcast 2. HIDDEN LONDON TOUR PRACTICALS Short but sweet, this Alexandra Palace walk is one to do when you want maximum views with minimum effort. We’re NOT sorry about it. Not one jot. If we have to keep carping on about St Dunstan in the East until our last breaths before you guys listen to us and go, well, that’s a burden we are willing to carry.

London has no shortage of hidden palaces (see St James’s above) but we guarantee that you’ve never seen one quite like Eltham Palace before. By 18th Century standards that meant fluted columns reminiscent of the reason of Ancient Athens (or would it be the might of Imperial Rome?) and a ceiling that evokes the Sistine Chapel: Far above you on that high ceiling is an enormous mural painted by Sir James Thornhill that depicts heroic fragments of English history, kings, battles, inventions. This loveliest of secret London walks is perfect if you like to be on the water and take in a variety of sights and neighborhoods as you go. It’s a good alternative to the Thames Path, and a great way to see some local London neighborhoods. Maybe it’s the fact that, despite being sandwiched between Covent Garden and Charing Cross Road, entering feels like stepping into the Narnia wardrobe. Along the way, pop into the delights of Pergola and Hill Garden (one of the contenders for the prettiest gardens in London) – covered in plants and vines it’s still something of a hidden gem.

Looking to See More of London Off the Beaten Track?

From Highgate to Canary Wharf, Ealing to Embankment, London Tree Walks reveals all kinds of great greens. The book features architectural, social, and natural history as well, so it’s a good one if you have a variety of interests. You may have been to Hatton Gardens – London’s diamond district – but have you ever heard of The Silver Vaults? My self-guided London street art walk will take you down Great Eastern Street and along side roads like Hanbury Street. The latter has some of the most impressive murals in east London. We can’t see how you can resist just the smallest amount of wonder as you poke around through thousands of exotic plants, vines trailing from the upper levels and greenery winding between the concrete structures. We just can’t… but you do you boo.
