About this deal

When it comes to crafting empty toilet roll tubes into helpful items for your home, your imagination and creativity are your only limits. We’ve listed a few of our favourite sustainable craft ideas below, but there are many more you can try to give your empty loo rolls a new lease of life. The St. Andrews Paper Mill in England in 1942 invented the first two-ply toilet paper which was softer and more pliable. Even softer toilet paper was introduced in the 1970s thanks to a new process that allowed the paper to air dry instead of having the water squeezed out of it. Should toilet paper be under or over? Most companies produce conventional toilet paper from virgin paper pulp, also known as virgin fiber. Some toilet paper companies also use materials like post-consumer recycled content, pre-consumer recycled content, and other alternatives like wheat straw and bamboo toilet paper. Virgin Fiber Separating the fibres to make pulp for papermaking takes far fewer resources when those fibres are recycled from recovered paper than when they’re derived directly from trees. Recycling is simply more efficient. It cuts down no trees, uses less energy and water, produces less solid waste, and diverts paper away from landfill.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when toilet paper was first invented, but the first mention of it appears in a journal from Chinese scholar Yen Chih-Thui. He pointed out that he wouldn’t dare use paper that contains quotations or commentaries as toilet paper. It’s clear from his comment that toilet paper wasn’t a new thing but had already been partially established in China. For this reason, we can put the date of toilet paper invention at around the sixth century. But even then, this wasn’t toilet paper as we think of it today. Who invented toilet paper? It criticised major tissue manufacturers such as Kimberly-Clark (owner of the Andrex brand) for relying almost exclusively on virgin fibre for their tissue products and failing to invest in alternatives. When choosing to shop greener so we can keep our oceans bluer, it is easy to drown in the sea of information and greenwashing! But which eco-friendly product is best? Sadly, we don’t have space for all the comments but below are a few of our favourites. We hope you feel inspired. Toilet tissue, however, was invented by Joseph Gayetty in the USA in the 19th century. He built the first factory in 1857 that produced paper exclusively for toilet use claiming it to be a medical product and his name was printed on every sheet. However, the report reveals that toilet paper manufacturers like Procter & Gamble, Kimberly Clark, and Georgia Pacific still produce tissue papers using virgin pulp from Canadian forests. In an example of greenwashing, Georgia Pacific introduced Quilted Northern Eco comfort, a brand that uses no recycled content and has no FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification.

Seth Wheeler, however, was the person to patent toilet rolls that had a perforated edge for every sheet to make for easy tearing. He did this in 1891. Plastics can even harm marine life without ever touching a drop of water. When burned, plastic waste releases methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse gas effect. Global warming is a significant danger to marine life, with rising sea temperatures threatening many species around the world. Is toilet paper bad for the ocean? In many countries, toilet paper isn’t commonly used and, as suggested by the quote below, many consider it uncivilised, preferring to wash with water. FSC Mix means that products are made using a mixture of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials, and/or FSC controlled wood. Controlled wood is not from certified forests and its production hasn’t been audited. It’s wood that is considered low risk of coming from a particularly harmful source such as an illegal logging operation or from Indigenous lands. However, the risk assessment is a paper-based process that doesn’t involve any inspections. When toilet paper is made from virgin fiber releases three times as much carbon, contributing a higher carbon footprint than tissue paper made from other materials. Recycled Content

This forest is a central ecosystem essential to fighting climate change. It stores more carbon dioxide than any other forest on earth, holding about 12% of carbon in its plant and soils. With one very well-known brand languishing at the bottom of the score table, and a cluster of recommended brands scoring highly, our choice of toilet paper can make a difference ethically and environmentally, especially as we use so much of the stuff. The boreal forest is home to hundreds of Indigenous groups and precious wildlife and acts as a globally significant carbon sink. The research found that virgin pulp, the main ingredient for tissue, was a major driver of logging in the boreal, accounting for 23% of Canada’s forest product exports. It can prevent the likes of whales and dolphins from communicating, finding food, and mating – all of which are actions fundamental to their survival. According to the Environmental Paper Network’s paper calculator, tissue made from recycled content has one-third the greenhouse gas emissions of tissue fibre made from virgin wood.
