I often find myself reaching for this book even having read it cover to cover whilst sitting on the settee, just to revisit these incredible images. From the tropics to the poles, from the shores to the deeps, the waters of the planet teem with an amazing diversity of creatures and plants and a wonderful sample of it is portrayed here in the book's 400 or so colour photos. As David Attenborough reminds us in his introduction the highest peaks on Earth are still unclimbed and there are still thousands, maybe even millions, of animal species that remain undiscovered because all are hidden under the waves of the oceans. Her bestselling first non-fiction book, Blue Planet II, has been translated into several languages around the world. The book is excellently organized and written in plain language comprehensible to almost any reader. Every creature in the ocean, from the tiny snail to the enormous blue whale depends on water for survival. The book is structured as a journey through different ocean settings – starting with The Deep, where we meet the weirdest and most wonderful creatures that look like something from a sci-fi movie but are – the book assures – as real as you or me.I read it in Sir David Attenborough's voice, for the sake of consistency (and just because I love his tone and cadence).

Emily Dove is an illustrator living in Cleveland, Ohio, where the winding rivers and fall foliage never cease to inspire her. In the entire solar system Earth is the only planet that has water in its liquid form in such quantities. Trees give off oxygen for living things to breathe, and they provide a home for countless bugs and animals all over the planet. The Blue Planet leads us on a voyage of exploration from the coasts, the very edges of the oceans, to the deep where weird and monstrous fish lurk in a world of perpetual darkness. Along the way we meet a host of wonderful creatures from tiny copepods to majestic blue whales, from the grotesque hairy anglerfish, to the amazing tripod fish that stands on 3 delicate legs waiting to snap up unsuspecting prey. It lacks the quantity of full page high quality images of some of the other BBC books, but I guess that leaves more room for reading material - I do like my pictures! Our team is made up of book lovers who are dedicated to sourcing and providing the best books for kids.
