About this deal

Draught-proofing won’t prevent heat loss in the same way that insulation will, but it will stop cold air from passing through the gaps and into the space below.

Good use of draft proofing could reduce your air permeability to around 8-10 metres cubed per hour which is a good low-cost way of reducing you heating bills. We hope this has given you a fairly quick and easy solution to stopping that annoying loft draft from entering your home! This brush seal screwed to the lower edge of a front door looks like it’s keeping draughts out but the thermal images below show that it's not very effective. However, the boards kept falling off the double-sided tape, so it's now got a load of parcel tape holding it down as well now. The attic hatch is a very large opening in that ceiling which accelerates this effect by allowing that rising air to escape the home. Once you have done this, you should then put an equivalent strip on the interior of the hatch frame.

For keyholes that are regularly used the best option is a little swing flap which can be screwed or glued onto the door with epoxy adhesive. This is fairly simple process; essentially you just need to attach the insulation to the top of the loft hatch. If the loft is insulated at the ceiling joist level, then insulating your loft hatch should confer a substantial benefit. However you can use ordinary glass-fibre insulation enclosed in a strong plastic bag/sheet stapled to the hatch cover.

Cross-section of a hatch and casing with ‘P’ seal What’s the difference between a draught-proof and an insulated hatch? A home loses about 25% of its heat through the top floor ceiling due to the effect of hot air rising.

You can check for air flow up a chimney using a smoking incense stick or similar – you will likely see the smoke being drawn up the chimney (let's not forget this was the original purpose of the chimney! A small rectangle of PIR (polyisocyanurate) board cut to size can usually be glued to the top to avoid a cold spot.

With these hygienic seals, you have the option to specify the colour of the seal, with a completely white seal, white backing with a black seal, or brown backing with a brown seal.

A fall from height can lead to very serious injuries so always make sure you’ve got a good solid ladder and ideally ask a friend to help if possible. The performance of a well-insulated loft hatch is significantly undermined if it is not airtight,’ says Camilla Govan.

It’s important to distinguish between draught-proofing and insulating your loft hatch as these are not the same thing. Important Note: Please do not send goods back to Roof Giant before speaking to the Roof Giant sales office. If you have a hinged loft hatch that doesn’t rest on a post then you’ll need to apply the foam strips to both the hatch surround and inside of the hatch frame so that the two strips meet and squash together a tiny bit. Weather stripping is inexpensive and will both increase your comfort, while decreasing your heating costs.
