About this deal

Yet regardless of the time spent in the studio, Def Leppard’s albums never seem especially labored or overwrought. In fairness, the band’s tardiness isn’t entirely the product of foot dragging, as the death of guitarist Steve Clark undoubtedly slowed this album (and doubled fellow guitarist Phil Collen’s workload) even more than the loss of drummer Rick Allen’s arm complicated the completion of Hysteria. Yet the Leps work these gimmicks in so gracefully that they never interrupt the music’s flow, acting not as unnecessary contrivances but simply as another level of hook. And there are hooks of every sort on Adrenalize, from broad strokes like the gloriously harmonized chorus of “Heaven Is” to ear-catching details like the little yodel Elliott slips into “Personal Property. Yet, after Allen courageously mastered a customized kit, Leppard played on, with Hysteria living up to its name, selling a whopping 25 million copies worldwide and spawning no less than seven hit singles.

He co-wrote six of the songs and his guitar parts were played by Phil Collen as well as his own making this the only album the band recorded as a four piece. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

Cumulatively, all this activity led to Adrenalize yielding further multi-platinum rewards for this seemingly invincible quintet blessed with an inherent knack for facing down the odds and coming up triumphant. Def Leppard had faced long delays, and the challenge of drummer Rick Allen losing his arm while making their previous album, Hysteria, and while trying to follow up the success, they also faced the prospect of doing so with a different producer, as Robert John "Mutt" Lange was already working with Bryan Adams. Having sold over 65 million albums worldwide since their debut release in 1980 and proved themselves one of rock music’s hardest working and consistently powerful live bands (playing to over 50 million fans in the last 15 years alone), this timely deluxe expanded edition is a must for any discerning music fan.

That’s not to say the album is any softer than its predecessors — certainly the crunchy guitars of “Tear It Down” or “Make Love Like a Man” are proof to the contrary — just that it’s not as noisily aggressive. The albums cover art featured an excited eye (adrenal - eyes) which was a picture of a human eye, model Miles Kendrick, later enhanced with computer imaging by Satori. Released at the height of grunge, ‘Adrenalize,’ Def Leppard’s much-anticipated follow-up to ‘Hysteria,’ saw the group reclaim the rock mantle. It is the first album by the band recorded without guitarist Steve Clark, who died in 1991, although most songs were written and partially demoed before his death, they were re-recorded solo by Phil Collen in 1991-1992. The band included a re-recording of Hysteria B-Side 'Tear It Down' due to it's popularity after the 1989 MTV Awards. Nor is Adrenalize, with its insistence on intensely tuneful, unrepentantly frivolous material, likely to change that. At the same time guitarist Steve Clark had been suffering from alcohol addiction since 1989, spending six sessions in rehab.

Clark was involved in writing six of the songs on the album, [8] but was given an ultimatum over his alcoholism in September 1990, and put on a six-month leave of absence.

With the album’s lead cut, the ridiculously infectious “Let’s Get Rocked,” setting the tone, Adrenalize again delivered in spades. The album followed on from the tragedy in 1991 of Steve Clark's death and was finished off as a tribute to his memory. Yes, not as good as either Pyromania or Hysteria but it does have some absolutely classic Def Leppard songs, some which do hold up to some of those mentioned albums.
