You still get some decision about how to optimize that movement among your armies, but it stinks when you have no choices. The use of colour to differentiate the battle dice and different factions really help to streamline the battle phase and it can be taught and grasped in a few minutes. Every turn, each faction will play a movement card to maneuver their troops and zero, one, or two event cards.

When playing as the English, I always feel dread as I see the huge Viking armies taking city after city, but also anticipation as I see opportunities constantly presenting themselves. I’d argue that 2 players is the ideal count, allowing you to control both forces on your half of the conflict. While some Viking players will be set on invading somewhere specific, the English are often the ones who determine where the first invasion happens. As you can see, all of the units shown are placed on the card along with any other reinforcements that the Vikings might have from their units that Fled earlier Battles.

However, it always seemed to be quite finely balanced by the end of each round despite the Vikings having a seemingly overwhelming force.This concept of a large sizable invasion and recreating this through a game brings a fascinating opportunity for some good play. This is a game that will definitely be sticking around for the long haul in our collection and has finally given me the Viking experience I’ve been looking for in board games. The board populates with the Housecarl and Thegn units as shown on the board in the small circled spots. The English start the game controlling all of England but a Viking Leader will invade from the sea each Turn. This method can be really restrictive: first off, if you only have one movement card you end up with only one option for movement on your turn.
